Perspectives and the Weight of the World

The image is of course that of the Greek god Atlas holding up the world.  In Greek mythology Atlas was a symbol of strength and endurance.

Funny though, in this particular depiction it appears to me that the weight of the world is forcing him to his knees.  It is interesting how perspectives can change depending on one's state of mind.

I wonder what would happen if he just lay down and let it role off.

He'd probably feel a whole lot better.

  2. Hi JSS!

This is such an interesting reflection.

I guess I have to agree that it looks to me that Atlas has indeed been brought to his knees by the weight he carries, and I s'pose that, on a purely practical level, in order for the artist to convey Atlas' incredible strength, he or she had to make the world appear to be weighty enough!

I also agree with Michelle's comment that surrendering is the most difficult thing, and in a certain way, may require more strength!

Atlas may feel physically better for laying down, but I bet it'd sting like hell if permanently proving his strength is his whole identity!
